WeePOP? Ahoy!

Woah, another bevy of WeePOP! goodness? We’re seriously the luckiest blog in the world to get these types of packages in the mail. I mean, not only do they send us their teensy compact records in the mail for free, but they almost always include a sticker, a piece of candy… something cute. And that’s a good way to get to RetroLowFi’s heart. Send us candy, stickers and fun pop records. You’re pretty much guaranteed a good write-up at that point.

In case you weren’t aware, WeePOP has recently begun selling out of their releases in such record time that they’ve now stepped each release up to 160 copies apiece. But according to weePOP.net, that hasn’t really done much to quell the demand. And I’ve heard whispers of WeePOP vinyl in the works, but… for now, let’s check out their last few releases, shall we?

weePOP!014 - Various Artists - Spring Forward!

All right, WeePOP has decided to break out the big guns here. Not only do were get a spring-themed compilation featuring great tracks by The Deirdres and Let’s Whisper… but this thing comes with a pop-up insert. Are you hearing me, people?? A POP-UP INSERT. And while it’s the cutest thing known to man, I’m apparently not the only one that thought so… because it’s already sold out as of this writing. And it’s a real shame, because even though it’s almost summer already, your twee collection isn’t complete without tracks like Zipper’s joyous “Sunday Morning”, or the uber-danceable vocoder laced “Take A Leap At The Sun” by The Hi-Life Companion. This seven song compilation is so good that I’ll make the statement again, definitively: WeePOP is the new Sarah records. Get on board now, or face the wrath of eBay later.

weePOP!015 - Wonder For All - s/t

Wendy is a gal with a ukelele and a cute story to tell. She alternately says that her WeePOP debut is best for listening to “while taking bubble baths” and “at picnics”. I say it’s a fairly fun seven-minute sojurn into the mind of a gal with a ukelele and a cute story to tell. You’re gonna hear lots of “la la’s”, whistling and songs about kissing and tummy aches. It’s an enjoyable few minutes, it’s twee as all get out, but unless Wendy has some serious pop chops up her sleeve… this may be the weakest link in the WeePOP catalog. That’s not to say that the EP is bad or that this reviewer dislikes it in anyway, just that… well, it all feels a little half-baked. It sounds like Wendy flipped on a tape recorder anytime she had half of a song in her head. And while those ideas might have been cute in their infancy, the Wonder For All EP doesn’t add up to a satisfying whole. Even for a whopping seven minutes. Something tells me that Wendy’s got an awesome follow-up hiding somewhere in her archives already…

Wonder For All - Holiday.mp3

As always, you can buy these releases from www.weepop.net, and I wouldn’t waste any time thinking about it. You have no idea how cool these things look on their very own shelf!
