Patience Please “Fleeting Frequencies” (Happy Happy Birthday To Me 2007)

It only takes listening to the first thirty seconds of “Blue Line” on the new Patience Please album to know you’re going to be in for a rollicking thirty-minutes of summery pop fun. The song jumps right out of the gates with chiming guitars, too-cheerful-to-be-pummelling drums and an articulate, yet still quiet vocalist politely singing out key lines like “She’s pale as ivory / This tale has irony”. And that’s that. You know right then and there if their new record Fleeting Frequencies is gonna be up your alley or not.

The positives far outweigh the negatives on the groups first full-length release, and that’s a nice surprise. After enjoying their fun-but-samey Parallel Plots EP last year, I was curious how these popsters would do stretching out to album length. The answer was there all the time: don’t change a thing, just release some more songs. I’d say that the group has certainly learned a thing or two about dynamics in the interim since last years aforementioned EP, judging by the crashing build-up in “Exclusively WIndermere”. Keenan Dowers keyboards seem to be a bit more prominent in the mix this time around as well, but this isn’t a band that one would labor to point out the individual strengths of each member. Nope, Patience Please is a tight unit that chugs along, united under one pop vision.

Occasionally, Fleeting Frequencies can show hints of cheesy pop-punk colors, but that’s mostly due to Ray Proudfoot’s nasally upper register and hopefully not some well-hidden Warped Tour aspirations. Nah, nevermind that last statement. Patience Please is a cohesive and caffeinated pop group that oughta turn the PopFest scene into swoony piles of squishy, melty pop fanatics. It’s good fun!

Fleeting Frequencies is out on Happy Happy Birthday To Me in September.
