I Pop, You Pop, We All Pop for WeePOP! Records!

In today’s bleak climate of buying half-assed music that only exists in binary code and getting no packaging for your money, it’s nice to see a label doing it the right way. I’ll sing their praises from here to Zimbabwe, but WeePOP! is a pop fanatics dream come true.

WeePOP! is run by Camila and Thorsten, two pop fans that wanted nothing more than to put out records by their favorite bands. They specialize in committing big pop songs to tiny packages… and I do mean tiny. The records have so far come in the form of 3″ CD’s sealed in decorated wage packets. All hand-crafted, to boot! The discs are super fun to look at, and eye-catching enough to grab your attention. Of course, the packaging wouldn’t make a lick of difference if the songs weren’t good, and these two teensy releases are simply extraordinary. RetroLowFi was lucky enough to snag copies of their first two limited edition releases, and we’ve simply gotta tell you all about them:

Roadside Poppies - Cycling and Crying EP:

This one is a whopping twelve minutes worth of instant-bedroom-dance party. Bedroom Poppies are energetic enough to distance themselves ever so slightly from the all too easy C86 reference point. Lo-fi, yet reverb-free enough to make you forget all about Sarah records… it’s great. Roadside Poppies enjoy chiming, driving pop hooks with just the right amount of boy-girl vocals to keep it twee while also going easy on the saccharine. Not that you’d mind at all with adorable lyrics like “I’m cycling / And I’m crying / It’s just my allergies”. These five pop phenoms do little else on the wonderful Cycling and Crying EP than make your indie pop mouth water for more, more, MORE!

Here. Have a listen to “Just Another Love Song” and see if you aren’t bowled over.

And this brings us to the second WeePOP! release:

Bugs Eat Books - Killers From The Start

We here at RetroLowFi were already familiar with Bugs Eat Books from all the homework we’ve lovingly done on Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records - the label that released BEB’s last full-length - as well as their appearance at last years Athens PopFest, but honestly, we could never have predicted how great the Killers From The Start single was actually gonna be. It’s just a two-song blast that gets you all excited and drives their cutesy tunes home with an animated video that’s embedded in the dic itself. If I were allowed to decide such things, I’d declare “Killers From The Start” to be the pop song of the summer, much as I did last year with Camera Obscura’s “Lloyd, I’m Ready To Be Heartbroken” track. Alas, I don’t have much say in those types of polls, but after checking out the video for the song here, maybe you can help us get the Bugs Eat Books revolution started. I mean, c’mon… we’d do it for your band.

WeePOP! is a label that caters to the world’s pop geeks, and they are doing a bang-up job o far. You can bet we’ll be keeping an eye on their upcoming releases. If not for the sake of our readers, at least for the sake of our record collections.
